Since 2016, the Marine Litter Round Table has been supporting the implementation of national measures against marine litter and serves as an information platform for all relevant interest groups. Together with around 130 experts, concrete procedures for implementing national measures against marine litter are being developed.

At the 14th RTM meeting, Yasemin Celik, a research assistant at the IKK, presented her research findings on the “recyclability of discarded nets.” The project is being carried out on behalf of WWF Germany. The aim of the project is to conduct a feasibility study to demonstrate effective pre-treatment (in particular cleaning) and mechanical recycling of discarded fishing nets, as well as their use in injection molding applications. The polyamide PA 6 obtained from the recycling process of fishing nets has already been successfully used as a demonstrator in the floor of small load carriers.

Based on the practical work carried out, the next steps in the project will involve developing a recommendation that shows how the effective transfer of the developed technology into practice can be ensured.
